Don
Miles’ professional career of almost 50 years was split about
evenly between teaching and broadcasting. He was News Director for
radio stations in NYC, NY, CT, FL, NE and Texas. He won AP’s “Best
Newscast” award in Nebraska, his news teams in Florida and Nebraska
have won numerous awards, and he has judged broadcast news awards for
UPI Rhode Island. He has taught at the Universities of Florida and
Nebraska, at St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas,and at

upsetting to many Mejuarian mothers and fathers having mewlings is
that their ancient tradition of birthing nests on an ancestral altar

all seems to go as planned, and they depart with all twelve ships
successfully. One ship dedicated to moving the birth alter intact
with nests placed on it trails the fleet. Unfortunately, the Mejuar
scientist’s slight miscalculation allowed for the meteor’s early
arrival. A shockwave forces the underpowered, overloaded ship
carrying the nests to crash land. Before its descent, a piece of the
broken altar is dragged into space, and two of its occupants

 

On
earth, a family torn with grief after the loss or their mother tries
to enjoy a day of convalescing by a local lake. Hubert, the local
veterinarian with his two children Ren a teen, and Brooklyn, his baby
sister, are exploring after a picnic lunch. Ren discovers the charred
nests and is curious as to what they are. Hubert also becomes
interested in the unusual possible chrysalids. The inquisitive vet
takes the nests back to his facility and uses the extent of written
and photo journals available to him in 1960. He is unable to identify

so their lands might be saved. He chose Lotus, Os, and Irenia, three
supernatural beings that couldn’t have been any more different from

Lotus,
an Ecrutian sorceress, had a pleasant countenance, flirtatious
manner, fanciful demeanor, and a festive quality. One of the most
adored sorceresses in the village, she worried over the deterioration
of their kingdom.

 

Os,
burly and over eight feet tall, was a formidable force. Dark eyes
with no pupils, he never smiled, and a scowl on his face always
intimidated. A warrior in his soul, he fought deadly battles against
other warlords.

 

Irenia,
an ancient wizardess, clumsy, awkward, and limited social ability,
always made other Ecrutians shy away from her, but she loves peace
and cherishes the life of all creatures. All love in the village
diminished, and she sought for the return of harmony.

 

The
Four unite into one being named Thire-los. Joined power directed
through Thie’s staff is unstoppable. All Ecrutians live under their
rule or suffer the consequences. Under their leadership, as
Thire-los, kingdom order is soon restored. However, restlessness
consumed the great entity, and the four began to fight within.

 

No
longer can Os live under such scrutiny by Thie, and he is cast out by
the sorcerer and banished to earth to live out his life as a meager
human. Without the four, order quickly returns to chaos. Irenia
watched nature turn to decay while Lotus suffered heartbreak at the
loss of Os, her true love.

 

As
all Ecrutis falls to ruin and despair, Irenia and Lotus hatch a plan

Barbara Goss lives in Western New York and to date has written 48 Christian and/or Sweet Romance books, mostly westerns. She enjoys crossword puzzles, penny slots, reading, swimming, and her two cats, but not necessarily in that order. Barbara began writing in 1988 and her first book, Forbidden Legacy, won first prize for fiction at a Christian Writers Convention in Titusville, Florida in 1989. She then took a few years off to work full time as a secretary to the county hospital and the local school system.

The moon was bright that night and the sky clear, making it less scary for Elsie. She had to rescue Conner, but she didn’t know how to go about doing it.

She soon saw some movement. Someone had stepped out of the mine. Elsie couldn’t see his face, but she knew it was Conner. Another man stood at the mine entrance, watching Conner, who carried a bucket.

Elsie moved in the direction that Conner had gone as quietly as possible, grateful for the thick brush to hide her. She saw him stop at a well, and luckily, there were enough bushes for her to crawl closer to the well. Conner was pumping water. She knew he couldn’t leave because one of the men was watching him from about twenty feet away.

“Conner,” she whispered loudly.

Conner swung his head in her direction, still pumping water. “Elsie?” His voice came out in a whispered squeak of surprise. “What are you doing here?”

“I’m here to bring you home.”

Conner didn’t look at her, but he kept pumping water. “Go home and stay safe. I can handle things. I don’t want to have to worry about your safety, too.”

“How many men are in there?” Elsie asked.

“Two and the… um…patient.”

Elsie could see that the bucket was full, and Conner would need to return to the mine. Before he turned back, he whispered, “Go home!”

“Wait!” Elsie whispered back.

Conner purposely stumbled, spilling half of the water. He turned back to the well to pump more. “What?”

She took a gun from her holster and tossed it near his feet. “I have the other one.”

In the moonlight, Elsie saw Conner’s mouth drop open. They noticed his guard lighting a cigarette, so Conner bent to pick up the gun and stuck it in his boot.

Curious Kids Gives Back Book Program: 
I believe all children deserve to be Curious Kids, and that’s why I’m implementing a BRAND NEW PROGRAM to help support literacy in local and at-risk children! As part of The Curious Kids Gives Back Book Program, I’ll be donating a paperback to a local or at-risk child for every ten paperbacks sold!
Millions of children are eligible for the CURIOUS KIDS GIVES BACK BOOK PROGRAM! If your child is between the ages of birth and twelve and either (A) lives in one of the six designated local areas [see below, (B) attends a Title I Funded School District, (C) lives on a state or federally-recognized reservation, or (D) lives in a rural area with a population of less than 100, they’re eligible! We’ll be expanding eligibility requirements as time continues!
Current designated local areas:
Cape May and Cumberland Counties in New Jersey
Pasco and Hernando Counties in Florida
Fayette and Calhoun Counties in West Virginia
