Interview of a YA illustrator and author, Mikey Brooks

Anna: Mikey, it is so good to have you with us this week. Tell us where you were born and where you live now.

Mikey: I was born and grew up in a rural town in Missouri. Now I live in the Salt Lake Valley in Utah. I absolutely love the tall granite mountains and big blue sky, however, Utah needs more trees. I sometimes miss driving through the tree tunnels.

Anna: More trees? LOL I know what you mean… How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

Mikey: This book took a lot longer than my others. I started writing it right after I got married while I was going to school and working fulltime. Then a baby came and before I knew it almost three years had passed. The sequel only took two months.

Anna: Yes, family is everything to me too. Who or What inspired you to write this book?

Mikey: It happened on late night when I was trying to fall asleep. I was thinking that I wished there was a magical person that could escort you to and from dreams—like the sandman. Suddenly the idea of a dream keeper popped into my head. I didn’t get to sleep for sometime later…but then I got a book out of it.

Anna: Really! that sound like an awesome idea.  What is the title of your book?

Mikey: It is called THE DREAM KEEPER.

Anna: Very fitting name… D

id you draw that colorful cover?

Mikey: Yes, I did do the cover…so if you ever need one…

That is so good to know and a very beautiful cover it is. Could you give us a back cover blurb?

Mikey: Dreams: Dorothy called it Oz, Alice called it Wonderland, but Nightmares call it HOME. When an evil shifter takes over the gateway to the realm of Dreams, it falls to 14-year-olds Parker and Kaelyn to stop him. Their only hope lies with Gladamyr, the Dream Keeper, but can they trust a Nightmare to save their world?

Anna: WOW! that sounds great. What genre does your book fall under?

Mikey: It is an upper middle-grade fantasy-adventure with a toe in both the real world and the fantastic.

Anna: Interesting… Do you have a favorite character, why?

Mikey: Gladamyr is my favorite character because I feel mostly connected with him. He is a nightmare who longs to be seen as something else. I think a lot of times we get boxed into cages of what others thing we are by the way we look or what we believe. Gladamyr was born in the darkest part of Dreams and everyone treats him like a monster for it. He longs to be human because humans are not strictly good and bad—they are both. It is our freedom to make choices that Gladamyr longs for. He wants to be a good dream and not a bad one.

Anna: That is a great concept. What kind of impact do you expect your works to have in the reader’s lives?

Mikey: I write for kids because I want kids to be interested in reading. If a child can find enjoyment in one of my books and that help them gain a love of reading I would be ecstatic. Mostly I just want my readers to have a good time and lose themselves in another world for a little while.

Anna: We all need an escape book. What else might pique the reader’s interest in your book?

Mikey: This book is fun because I delve into the nightmares of children, but it’s also fun because you get to see two teens struggle to stand out from the crowd. “Loser” is the most frightening word to ever be uttered in middle school. Even the coolest kids are afraid of being associated with it and Parker Bennett is no exception. He can’t even be himself around his friends for fear they might not accept who he really is. When circumstances force him to team up with Kaelyn Clarke, the biggest loser in the ninth grade, Parker has to decide what is more important; protecting his social status or saving the world.

Anna: You hit the nail on the head there… Where can we find your book?

Mikey: You can find the book in stores or online at:
