The Interview:Tell us where you were born and where do you live now.
I was born in Houston, Texas and am living now in Temple, Texas.
What makes you passionate about writing?
I’ve always enjoyed reading, and there’s just something fun about making up my own stories.
How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?
With this book, I had the story fully written out in about 5 months.
Who or What inspired you to write this book?
I had just moved into a new apartment and I wanted to write a story about aliens because that’s a subject I had never tried writing before.
What is the title of your book?
I call This book From Elsewhere.
Could you give us a back cover blurb?
When the space alien Nysol runs to Earth in order to escape his enemies, the lives of the humans he encounters are changed forever. After unintentional mistakes are made, will these people even have any desire to keep him safe from those who pursue him?
Have Nysol’s quick decisions only created a trap that will ensnare everyone he tries to get close to?
Will Lester and Sean come to regret their quick trust and curiosity for the deceptively human alien?
The author, Sarah Baethge:
What genre does your book fall under?
It would be Science-fiction or modern-fantasy.
Do you have a favorite character, why?
I suppose I have to like Lester Jones because my idea for that character was something of a male version of myself.
What kind of impact do you expect your works to have in the reader’s lives?
I’m not sure that the book is anything more than entertainment.
What else might pique the reader’s interest in your book?
I did try to rework my doctor’s actions when one of my beta-readers that was a doctor told me that my Dr. Amy would get sued if she acted like I said.

Please tell us your name? My name is Kelvyn Fernandes, author of The Many Adventures of Peter and Fi
Kelvyn, where were you born? I was born in Toronto, Ontario, but my parents immigrated to Canada from Mombasa, Kenya.
Cool…how long have you been writing? Ever since I was a child, I’ve been passionate about writing. I’ve always had running storylines and new ideas constantly popping into my head. I’ve written a few short stories, but this is my first full-length novel and I’m excited to share it with the world.
Interesting, Who are your favorite authors? My favourite authors are George R. R. Martin, Brandon Sanderson, and Haruki Murakami. Growing up, I enjoyed reading the works of JK Rowling, Emily Rodda, Kathryn Lasky, and Christopher Paolini.
Loved the Aragon Series too. Tell us why you wrote your new book? I’ve always had ideas for fantastical tales and far-off adventures running through my mind. They would blast their way into my imagination, linger awhile, and then move on so the next idea could take its place. The Many Adventures of Peter and Fi is the first story that I will never forget. It’s the story that popped into my mind and refused to leave. The characters took hold and dragged me through a tale of incredible monsters, interesting characters, and jaw-dropping settings I had buried away in my imagination. It got to the point where the adventures started writing themselves. I had formed these characters so clearly in my mind that I no longer had to think about what they’d say or how they’d react. It was like watching a movie; I was just bearing witness to what they would do next.
I love it when characters do that. The Many Adventures of Peter and Fi, what is it about? The Many Adventures of Peter and Fi follows the titular characters as they work together, each searching for something uniquely special to them through the four kingdoms of their known world. It’s a tale of fantastical beasts, peculiar characters, remarkable settings, and a unique brand of biochemistry-based magic. A story that focuses on meaningful character interaction, delicate world building, and intense action battles.
What age is The many adventure of Peter and Fi intended for?
I’d say the main demographic is 13-25, but the story is meant for anyone who enjoys getting lost in a fantasy world.
Sounds interesting. Is there a book trailer for your book? You can find out more about the first volume and the plans for the Peter and Fi series as a whole here: https://youtu.be/SjR8NQWJoP0

2- What changes did 2019 bring to your writing?
I got to call myself an award-winning author for Missing Remnants thanks to Indie Authors Monthly magazine. I never expected that to happen, so thank you IAM. This year is the first time in recent years I’ve written something set on contemporary Earth. The town of Bulwark is not real but the setting was small-town America rather than in space or on an alien planet where I usually set a story.
3- Why did you do an anthology? Was it harder or easier than writing a full out novel? What was the hardest part?
Why? Exposure. Pure and simple. The more places you can showcase your work, the more chances you have of enticing one more reader into your world. The story for the anthology was shorter than a novel, so that part was easier. The anthology was challenging because it had a deadline, I don’t usually write to a deadline. I was also writing characters I did not create so I was mindful of building on them in a way that was credible. Another challenge was writing about something in America. I’m English. We wear trousers over here, pants are underwear. Everything had to be written with American terminology in mind.
4- How did you come up with your story?
There were snippets in the original story that sparked something in my imagination. The original contained aspects of Hansel and Gretel. I watched a TV programme called Mr Benn when I was a child. A man walks into a costume shop, tries on a costume, walks through a door and has an adventure. Of course, when I re-watched Mr Benn recently, I found I’d not remembered any of it correctly and I’d written something completely different but that’s not a bad thing.
5- what is the hardest part of being an indie?
Promotion and marketing. The trouble with being an indie is that you have to coordinate everything. Even if you’re passing things like editing and cover design over to a third party, an indie author is the publisher. We are responsible for everything. I wonder how many of us wish we could just write the book and have someone else do the rest for us. I know I do. Marketing is something that can be costly, hit and miss with results and just a completely alien thing for a lot of us to undertake. We have to promote ourselves. I’m sure there are many authors uncomfortable with the concept of waving their arms in the air and screaming I’m over here, look at me.
6- Do you stay with one genre, or jump around?
I can’t even live in this reality, let alone write in one genre! I am happier when I’m not constrained to only one thing. I always have been. Writing flows easier and quicker for me when I am not tied to a single genre. I’ll write science fiction, but it’ll have aspects of horror and humour. I’ll write horror but it’ll also have humour because people crack jokes in real life and the same person can also experience something horrific. I write a mixture of things, but I find that’s more realistic despite some of my more unrealistic settings. Humans are humans whether they’re on this planet or you’ve imagined them in space.
7- Share the process of this collaboration? What inspired you from the original story and how did you marry it to your own work?
The original story has a theme of weird things happening when a pool of green water is present. There were also modern-day characters who appeared to be from different eras. I kept those themes running through my story whilst also creating something that could be read as a standalone work.
8- Would you do another anthology?
Yes, I think collaborating on an anthology is a great way to showcase what an author can do. Every author has a different set of readers they can reach. A collaboration means an author has a greater chance of reaching a wider audience.
9- What trends do you see in indie books?
There’s a lot of them! Both trends and indie books. It’s very difficult to be seen. I’ve seen authors try many things. Free is a massive trend at the moment. I’m hearing more and more authors refusing to give their books away for free because they’ve spent money getting them to the market in the first place. Competition is fierce and always will be. I don’t think the trend of hard work will ever change.
10- What makes your books stand out from the sea of indie authors out there?
I’m not unique, but I have a relatable author’s voice. I have a flair for humour and an ability to write a scene in a way that doesn’t drag. I zone out of books I read that interrupt the flow of action with passages of the description which don’t seem to move the story on. So, I like to avoid writing the things that bore me as a reader. We all have different preferences and that’s why there is potential for every decent author to find the readers who appreciate their work.
